The long, pointed green leaves have a sleek, satin-like sheen and are rimmed with lots of ruffles. Deep red petioles ooze plenty of colour well into the lower half of each leaf. In mid-summer, the foliage blushes with bronze then in late summer, purple flowers are held on deep red flower scapes.
